And the tree is up!!

In the past twenty years I've celebrated Christmas twice. I became disenchanted by the whole consumerist behemoth it has become, steadily growing in sales year after year. (Christmas candies have been in the store since October!)

But... times change, and so do thoughts and behaviors. So this Christmas we are buying as much as we need (and want) from local artists and craftspeople to help support their work. This includes ornaments made of horn and ceramic for the tree, as well as some handspun yarn, from fingers rather than machines. Homemade food from the Christmas market counts too (everything from homemade chocolate to mangalica sausage). Books, well, that's another story, for I could not imagine any other present under the tree than one of words by the thousands.

This was our first year ever growing kale.

All I can say is that we've given away more than we could ever eat ourselves. There was just too much of such!

While it looks great growing in our no-dig garden, 17 plants were over-abundant. Next year, I think we'll cut the number down to 8 or so. That way, we can leave more space for carrots and other root crops that can also last long into winter. That's the biggest gardening lesson learned this year.

At the moment, we also have several cabbages ripe for the picking. Should probably do that before we get a bigger frost. So much to do, it's hard to find good weather to winterize the garden, especially when everything seems to want to keep growing.
